Our Story
The birth of this story of flavor begins with a 10 year old boy named Roger Joshua Jones III growing up in rural mid-Michigan. This boy decided to start preparing meals for his family of five. Being the youngest kid in the family I presume this decision was two part, first an attempt to bring some exciting flavors into the norm of their Irish-American pallets and second being the attempt to remove himself out of the chore of doing dishes which was assigned to those whom did not prepare the meal. His excitement and eagerness to experiment with creating beautiful fun and delicious meals followed him into his teens and later college years. While studying ceramics and other studio art avenues in college he worked many jobs associated with the preparation of food from short order chef jobs to high end restaurants.

That boy later became my husband. This story like many others is also combined with a love story. A story so rare that my husband referenced it as “The greatest Love Story ever told” in his wedding vows. Yes it’s true we met in high school and started seriously dating our freshman year in college (1998). We traveled around the country camping together exploring the wonders this world has to offer through people, music, culture and food. We lived in multiple states a zillion apartments and houses sometimes with several other roommates and other times just the two of us. We both ended up graduating with our Bachelor degrees from Western Michigan University. Myself with a double major in Environmental Science and Cultural Anthropology and Roger with Studio Art degree. More of the adventure of life was had, living in different parts of Michigan and five years in San Diego California only to find our hearts still yearning to be back in Michigan.

To us nothing felt like home without the four seasons. We decided we just couldn’t live without the romance of the smell of mud and new life that spring’s first rain brings, the long sunlit days of mid-summer; the feeling of jumping straight into a crisp beautiful lake first thing in the morning after a long night of playing music around a fire with libations and laughter; the crispness of fall as summer says goodbye until next time and the pure pleasure felt when cooking food for loved ones hunkered down in a cozy house surrounded by a wicked snow storm.
Roger proposed to me while we were camping in Joshua Tree National Park. He woke me up in our tent with the sunrise blazing behind him in the background and asked me to marry him, I said yes! We moved back to Michigan and were married in a beautiful Barn in Charlevoix Michigan. The greatest party ever…said the 200 guest who continue to fill our lives with love, graciousness and compassion.
In 2014 we were blessed with the life of our daughter Cedar. No we reside in the small town of Plainwell Michigan just a hop skip and a jump north of our beloved town of Kalamazoo. Two years after our daughter was born we were able to finagle a way for me to leave my position as a Project Scientist so that I could stay home with our daughter. In 2019 we began the journey of starting a hot sauce company.
So let us give pleasure in the goodness of food and flavor and douse ourselves in love and gratitude. We are very proud of our products and we hope others will continue to enjoy them as our business grows and our product selection increases.
As a small company our motto is to create delicious yet unique hot sauces that can complement any hot sauce lovers favorite dishes. Kalamazoo Hot Sauce Co. uses locally sourced produce from nearby farmers whenever possible to create our recipes. We believe it takes a village and continued community support in order to help businesses flourish while sustaining wonderful and unique products made with love in Michigan.
Cheers,
